Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal

The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) is the body responsible for adjudicating upon circumstances of alleged misconduct by solicitors, their clerks and registered foreign lawyers in relation to breaches of the Solicitors' Code of Conduct 2007 and other related rules.  The SDT has a number of powers which it can use where there has been misconduct including the striking off of a solicitor from the Roll, suspension from practice, fining or administering a reprimand. It's decisions can be the subject of appeal to the High Court.

In particular, you may find useful the Law Society's guidance as to when a solicitor's conduct will warrant a referral being made to the SDT.  This can be found in the document Test for referral of a solicitor's conduct to the SDT on the Law Society's web site.  Previous findings of the SDT can also be found at the Law Society's web site.  These go back as far as April 2005.
